"...Let me clear my THROAT!"
We watched the Republican National Convention this evening. I can't say that they really spoke to me on any level, although I applaud the African relief efforts. Too little, too late? Maybe...but at least something is being done, and lives ARE being saved. I can't vilify anyone or any nation for trying to do something.
But an odd phenomenon struck us tonight...and once we noticed it, we were unable to ignore it. Ken noticed it first, when Laura Bush was speaking, and pointed it out to me. I just chalked it up to a dry mouth, or nerves. When Fred Thompson spoke, there it was again. By this time, we knew it wasn't a fluke. What was going on?! When Joe Lieberman gave his address, it was so glaring that we couldn't ignore it, and in fact, it was about all we could pay attention to! We couldn't stop laughing about it.
AHEM.
We don't know if it's an age thing, or a Republican thing...or what. But each of these speakers constantly cleared their throats after they said a few sentences. It was so bad that we weren't listening to what they were saying, we were just waiting for the next phlegm ball to hit the stage! The Pres spoke via satellite, and no matter what you think of him, apparently he's been in the public eye long enough that he was able to control his phlegmy-ness, and we heard no "ahems" from him.
I'm no public speaker, but I would think I'd have enough sense to step back from the microphone before I came close to hocking a loogey.

I didn't watch it but I know from experience, that a case of nerves will do that to your throat. Hmmm, now I wish I would have watched it. Linda in WA

Gross!! Ever notice when people speak, the "you knows", "um", "you know what I mean?", all those filler words that are so annoying, granted by the time you're at the public speaking level, you should have cleared all that out of your system! I belonged to Toastmasters and they help you be conscious of how you speak. Every meeting had an "ah/um" counter...and when you have 60 ums in a 2 minute talk...not good! Athletes are the worst!

Now I'm sorry I missed it...I would have enjoyed the laugh as well. It is kind of hard to believe they wouldn't excuse themselves and step back. Love the cat, he has my vote!

Was there incense involved? A mass? Ok, I am only half kidding. I noticed that in the past when I'd attend mass with Dad & it was usu after the incense was waved around. ;) About 10 people would start Aheming instead of Amening.
Seems like more than a coincidence that they
were all clogged up, Democrats and Republicans,
and now that you mention it, would that not be a
way to sabotage speakers? A little spray here and
a little spray there, what do you think?
BTW, my cousin almost died of Legionairres from
a clogged hotel air vent. Just a thought.
