Ouch, man

Today, Senator John Kerry endorsed Barack Obama for president. I'm not sure how much weight that carries, but it does send an interesting message, and sure seems like a slap in the face to John Edwards. Here these guys were running mates, Kerry wanted Edwards to be the VP of the country, and a few years later, he doesn't give him his endorsement? It makes me think that there's something more to the story, maybe some bad blood. Pure speculation on my part, but it does seem odd--and perhaps telling--that Kerry is pulling for Obama instead. Also, sounds like Bill Richardson is dropping out. Why is HE dropping out and Kucinich is still in it?! I don't get it.

Here's my topic for today.

When I saw this question, I had to laugh, because I immediately thought of something that happened a couple of summers ago. Ken and I went down to visit my parents. They have a log house with front and back porches that stretch the length of the house. It's a neat place. Anyhoo, we sat out in the rocking chairs on the front porch for a while, just talking and getting caught up. Mom must have mentioned some of the stuff she'd planted, because we all walked around the house looking at her shrubs and flowers. We walked by one shrub, and one of us spotted a praying mantis on it. We all stopped and were oohing and ahhing over her (it was a large one, so it was a she), and as we were watching, a bee flew by the mantis, and--it happened so quick, we could hardly believe our eyes--the mantis reached out her arms and snatched that bee right out of the air. I think we all gasped and said, "Did you see that?!"

We kept watching. The mantis started to eat the bee, and in a matter of five minutes or so, she had devoured the entire thing. I can't remember if she ate the head first, or saved it for last, but she ate it all.

My parents have always been nature-lovers, and curious about the world around them. They passed that along to me, I'm happy to say. It's pretty cool to see what you find when you simply look around you.

It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen, and we still talk about it. For the space of maybe ten minutes total, all four of us were enthralled with the drama unfolding on a shrub in my parents' yard.

Quick addendum

I'm watching our local news, and the story is about the pot holes--the bane of drivers everywhere--we're getting already, but the guy said "pot holders!" Ha! And as I was writing, he said it again! He's a pretty good newscaster, seems to be a very pleasant guy, and he was laughing about it, too. I don't know why that tickled me so much, but I'm still giggling.

Saw your journal under the most recently updated and the name of it caught my attention, so I thought I'd stop by.  You're right about the Kerry/Obama thing.  I think there's more to the story than that too.

I'd like to invite you to stop by my journal, THE FIRST AMENDMENT, NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT.  Leave a comment if you'd like.  Hope to see you there!

Isn't it amazing the simple things in life that give you pleasure and memories. I loved that story of the Praying Mantis. My daughter and I rescued a Huge snapping turtle from being ran over near our house. She reluctantly came along to satisfy me and I genuinely needed her help it was so big it barely fit the bottom of my large laundry basket. We both carted the heavy turtle to a creek on my property, barely keeping our fingers intact. She complained and grumped the entire time. On the way back from the creek I looked back and noticed a small smile appearing on her face. She later thanked me for making her help save the turtle and was glad it was given a chance to live longer. I want her to remember that some day, that we worked together to save an innocent creature.......(Hugs) Indigo

Aww, I love that story, Indigo. You're exactly right...sometimes it's the simplest things that leave the most lasting memories. (And I'm glad no fingers were lost to that snapping turtle...that's a memory you don't want!) Thanks for reading!
