Bag lady

Our friend Lee sent us a link to a slideshow about plastic bag usage.

I've forwarded it on to many of you, although I rarely do forwards. I just feel that it's really important, and while I've preached before about getting away from using plastic bags, I think the images in the slideshow speak very clearly. To me, it's very sobering to see the huge mounds of plastic bags. And isn't it ugly to see bags caught in trees like in this picture? Strange fruit, indeed.

This is such a simple thing to do, and it's something that can be done relatively pain-free! Reusable bags are much less expensive than when we bought ours a couple of years ago, and we've even gotten some freebies here and there for rejoining various organizations (National Wildlife Federation, etc.).

I had been using plastic bags for litterbox cleaning, but I recently bought a package of paper lunch bags, and they're doing the job quite nicely. Now I need to figure out what I can do for the kitchen trash...ah-ha! Ken informs me that they sell biodegradable plastic bags. The search is on! I'll let you know what I find.

So the next time you're at the store, think about grabbing one of the reusable bags that most stores are selling now. Spend a dollar, save a seal! Or a duck...or a turtle....

If you click through to the slide show, use the scroll feature to see all 36 slides.  As Kermit says, it is not easy being green :o)

well Beth first visit to Nutwood for me !!  I am pleased to see that in the US you are also thinking about changing your usage of plastic bags. There are many villages/towns over here that have banned the plastic bags altogether..none of the shops provide them and it has been a great sucess. Most of our supermarkets now charge for using their plastic bags and some have a reduction if you bring your own. It has made us all think very much more about there use.  My big thing now is disposable nappies...I cannot imagine what our world will look like in 100s of years of landfill fill full of filthy nappies that take eons to compost..yuk...Love Sybil x

I reuse my grocery bags in two bathrooms. I never buy bags for those. The colors don't match up but who cares LOL. They are mostly white anyway so that works. Helen

I just watched a show on the Discover channel about the extraordinarily long shelf life of our discarded plastic. Not just bags but bottles and those rings that hold six packs of beer and sodas. Let me know if you find the biodegradable plastic bags. I already have reusable shopping bags but I confess to still using plastic garbage bags.--Sheria

it took me 2 minutes to realize it was not a video and i had to scroll down. DUH.
We always use plastic bags and then recycle...now i WILL try to decrease that.....at WM i believe the cloth bag with their name on it is $1.50, like that insulated one i bought. I got two free cloth bags at the fair....i will use them more.

If you want fancier bags. Barnes and Nobles also sells them (usually located behind the counter- these are not the expensive cloth bags they have their). I brought a few that are $1.50 a piece. They are bigger and more...unique than the normal grocery bags (winks)....(Hugs)Indigo

Yes, plastic bags are nasty and I hate to see litter strewn about.  I like the idea of re-usable totes.

I also have gotten some nondisposable bags, but still get some too.  I also use them for the cat box trailings and also if you have a lot of bags (paper too) take them to the Thrift Store and they use them to bag the purchases.
